Valves for use in swimming pools often have a stainless steel or PVC body, due to the good corrosion resistance of these materials. The stainless steel grades 304 or 316 are commonly used, of which 316 has the best properties. Under certain circumstances, they might be prone to pitting. PVC (PolyVinyl Chloride) has good mechanical properties and is corrosion resistant. Stainless steel is not suitable for components which come into contact with high concentrations of sodium hypochlorite, such as dosing valves. In this case, PVC is a better choice.
