Burkert 6011 Solenoid Valve - How They Work

Figure 1: Bürkert 6011 solenoid valve

The Bürkert Type 6011 valve is a  normally closed (NC) direct operated 2/2-way miniature solenoid valve. It is the smallest type of the direct operated D.EV Bürkert series with a nominal diameter range between 1 and 2.4 mm. The plunger valves of the D.EV series are designed for small flow rates and are often used in machine construction, instrument engineering and pneumatic equipment.

This cost-effective valve type is designed for neutral and clean liquids, gases and vapors. It is available with a wide range of connections, such as threaded connections, push-in fittings or a subbase flange. The valve is available in brass, stainless steel and polyamide (nylon). The possibilities are increased further with a range of certifications for drinking water, food and oxygen.

There are special options, such as helium leak test versions, highly sealed versions, strand versions, and free of oil, grease and silicon versions.

Is Bürkert 6011 the right valve for you?

The 6011 valve is designed especially for shut-off, filling, dosing and ventilation applications. The compact design is suitable for small flow rates. The nominal diameter lies between 1.2 and 2.4 mm and the maximum pressure varies from 3 up to 21 bars, depending on the orifice size and coil.

Because of the direct acting design, the valve can be used in systems without a pressure differential, such as a closed circulating circuit or gravity fed system. It can also be used for technical vacuum. Bürkert 6011 might be the right choice for your application if:

  • Your medium is technical vacuum, a neutral gas or fluid, ultra-pure, or aggressive provided that it is compatible with body and seal material
  • Your flow rate is very small
  • You are looking for a compact manifold design
  • You are looking for a valve to use for drinking water or oxygen

Operating principle and design

The main components of this valve type are a coil, a closing spring, a valve body cover and the valve body with the seal (figure 2). The Bürkert type 6011 is a normally closed valve. That means when the coil is de-energised, the outlet is blocked. In this stage, the closing spring and the pressure from the medium push the plunger onto the valve seat.

Bürkert Type 6011 components: coil (A), subbase (B), locknut (C), o-ring (D), stopper (E), shading ring (F), spring (G), core (H), guide tube (I), o-ring (J), armature seal (K), and body (L).

When the coil is energised, it generates a magnetic force that pulls the plunger in and against the return spring. The upward motion of the plunger, lifts the seal up from the valve seat and opens the channel (Figure 3).

Approvals for the 6011 valve

This valve type is available with the below listed approvals:

  • UR 429: Underwriters Registered inspects and certifies products with respect to their safety
  • Watermark: A certification used in relation to water supply, sewerage, plumbing and drainage goods in Australia.
  • KTW W270: The KTW guideline is the approval of plastics and other non-metallic materials (e.g. sealing materials) for use with potable water in Germany.
  • FDA: The US Food and Drug Administration
  • Oxygen suitability: Tests the sealing material compatibility for use in flanged connections with liquid and gaseous oxygen.

Features

Material selection

The body materials available for this valve are brass, polyamide (nylon) and stainless steel (1.4305 or grade 303). Please refer to our guide on chemical resistance for housing material for more information.

The seal material is FKM. Media suitable for this valve are technical vacuum, neutral gases and fluids (e.g. compressed air, water, hydraulic oil, etc.) and neutral/aggressive media that are compatible with the body and seal material.

Body design: inline or subbase (SFB)

Bürkert 6011 is available with threaded ports, push-in fittings or with a subbase design. The Bürkert specific flange design (SFB) enables the valve to be mounted as a block directly on a multiple manifold to save space. Customised geometries compatible with the standard block flange can also be used.

Port size range

The valve is available with a port connection of M5 or G 1/8”. The table below shows the corresponding orifice sizes and Kv-values. The Kv-value indicates the flow rate of water in m3 per hour with a pressure drop of 1 bar. Correct valve sizing is very important to guarantee good performance of your system and also to optimize costs. Please note that the maximum pressure of DC valves is lower than that of AC valves. Use our valve sizing calculator to quickly determine the right valve size.

Table 1: Bürkert Type 6011 valve orifice size and Kv values

Port size (BSP/Metric) Orifice (mm) Kv (m3/h) Pressure AC version (bar)
M5 1.2 0.045 0-21
M5 1.6 0.06 0-12
G 1/8" 1.6 0.06 0-12
G 1/8" 2.0 0.11 0-8
G 1/8" 2.4 0.13 0-6

Instead of threaded ports, the valve can also be delivered with push-in hose connections. The push-in fittings provide a compact, fast and reliable connection. Furthermore, there are no tools needed to connect a hose.

Analytical version (6011 A)

Type 6011 A represents the analysis and vacuum technology version and is manufactured under clean-room conditions. 100% of the valves undergo a special leakage test and all parts in contact with the media are cleaned from any organic and inorganic substances. The leak tightness is better than 10-4 mbar l/s. This valve type is designed for shut-off, dosing, filling, ventilating and particularly for analysis technology. The analytical version is available in brass or stainless steel, but not in polyamide.
