Shock Absorber Locking Nuts

Locking nuts fix a pneumatic shock absorber at the chosen mounting depth on its threaded body. The nut takes the impact reaction force, keeps the absorber square to the impact path, and prevents it from rotating loose during cycles.

The nut is the standard counter-nut for thread-mounted absorbers. It runs on the same fine pitch as the absorber body and seats against the back face of the bracket, so the absorber clamps between the front shoulder of the body and the nut. Tightening the nut also stops the absorber drifting under vibration.

On aluminium or composite brackets, a flat washer under the nut spreads the clamping load and prevents the nut from biting into the bracket face. Two nuts can be tightened against each other as a lock-nut pair where an accidental loosening would be a hazard.
