A transformer is a static device that transfers electric energy from one AC circuit to one or more other circuits, while increasing (stepping up) or decreasing (stepping down) the voltage in the process. Transformers are employed for many different purposes, including the reduction of voltage in conventional power circuits to operate low-voltage devices, such as doorbells and toy electric trains, as well as the elevation of voltage from generators to enable the transmission of electricity over long distances.
