An air regulator continuously controls the output pressure to a certain stable level, even if the input pressure is varied. They are an important step to ensure that down-line components receive the optimal operating pressure. They usually have an adjustable output pressure range that can be set with a rotatable knob on top of the regulator.

An air pressure regulator should be specified above a components max pressure capability and the compressors. However, excessive oversizing is not cost-effective. View the product manual’s flow chart to correctly size an air compressor pressure regulator based on the system flow rate and desired outlet pressure. Please note that the maximum flow rate alone is not adequate to size your pressure regulator. Use the flow curve to determine if the pressure drop (droop) within your expected flow rate range is acceptable. The flow curve shows the flow rate for a set input pressure with multiple output pressures. For each output pressure can be seen how the pressure drops with increasing flow rate. It is recommended to use the device in the flat range of the curve, and not on the beginning or the end of the curve. Note that the pressure regulator controls the output pressure, not the flow rate.

If a system is exposed to pressures that are too high for a single device, multiple in line air pressure regulators can be installed in series to reduce the pressure in two or more stages. The pressures can be read from a pressure gauge located on the unit.

A regulator can also be relieving or non-relieving in instances that pressure is above the max pressure rating. Relieving regulators have a built-in vent to let pressure escape, optimal for cheap and/or non-toxic gases. Non-relieving regulators do not relieve the air and rely on a secondary device to decrease pressure and are optimal for expensive and/or toxic gases.
