Current Transformer
Current transformers convert a high current or voltage into a proportional safe low value in order to measure or protect. The current transformer is able to reduce or "step-down" current levels from thousands of amperes to a standard output of one or five amperes for normal operation. Consequently, accurate instruments and control devices of small size can be used with current transformers because they are insulated from any high-voltage power lines. Current transformers have a wide range of applications and uses, including wattmeters, power factor meters, watt-hour meters, protective relays, as well as miniature circuit breaker trip coils.
