Smart MC sells monitoring & control solutions for vacuum sewers all over the world. The Tameson pneumatic actuators ensure that the system works as it should. Don van Soest, owner of Smart MC, explains how the cooperation came about and what the components exactly do in the systems.

Continuity and short lines
"Bonaire, Florida, Bahrain: you will find our wireless solutions everywhere. Wiring is actually only possible for new buildings, because then you are digging trenches anyway. For everything else, wireless monitoring is the solution. We can measure the status of every manhole in a sewer, i.e. whether the valve is open or closed. But also, how long it has been open, the vacuum pressure and other available information. The best part is that we can remotely control a vacuum valve, for example in case of a malfunction or to let in air. We do that via a pneumatic controller, which is equipped with a 24V pneumatic actuator from Tameson. This has worked out very well. We tested the products first and the communication is good. We are therefore very satisfied. We have yet to experience how the parts will perform on Bonaire, where the temperatures are much higher. But I don't expect any problems there. It is important for us that Tameson is a Dutch company that provides continuity in the product range and communicates via short lines."
Industrial automation combined with IT
Don van Soest has been in the industrial automation business for years. After jobs at Stork and other great employers, he took up the challenge of starting his own business in 2002. Initially, this was more in the IT corner, but gradually the world of industrial automation and IT blended together. A collaboration with Flovac followed in 2018, for which Don van Soest developed a wireless monitoring system for vacuum sewers. He also offers that system to other interested parties under the name Smart MC.
The ingenious monitoring system is a good example of applying the advantages that the Internet offers for underground maintenance. All information about the sewerage system is continuously updated. This data comes in via the cloud and action can be taken remotely if necessary. The systems are tailor-made for the sewage system in order to achieve the best possible results and save the client money.
Continuous development
The development never stops at Smart MC, Don van Soest tells us: "We are currently busy developing a solution for the whole of Bonaire with which they can connect all wells, gas meters and water meters to their own wireless network. Our goal is to develop equipment with relatively low power that can still connect to the network. Even if we want to do something indoors, we can do that because we can use the Wi-Fi network in the building for communication."
