The 2-way function means that the valve has two ports (an inlet and an outlet) and a ball with a bore in it. The threaded connection ensures easy installation. There are various thread standards, such as BSPP (parallel), NP, or BSPT (tapered). 2-way single union ball valves are operated by a manual hand lever to turn the ball 90 degrees, which is why they are often called quarter-turn ball valves or shut-off valves. Simply turn the handle perpendicular to the pipe to close it and parallel to open it. This allows for easy visual identification on whether a two-way ball valve is open or closed.

PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is lightweight, strong, and durable, giving it long service life. The PVC housing makes these valves suitable for water, corrosive media (seawater), most acids and bases, salt solutions, and organic solvents.
